Assam cops fire in the air after being attacked by mob
The police opened fire in the air in Assam’s Bongaigaon district on Saturday in order to disperse an unruly mob at a market which attacked the officers on duty when they asked the people to abide by the lockdown order.
The incident took place at Bhawlaguri market in the district when large number of people gathered at meat and shops without maintaining the social distancing norms.
The police personnel on duty intervened the large crowd and most people dispersed, however only to return with machetes and stones.
When pelted with stones the officers resorted to lathicharge and opened fire in the air to quell the unrest. Additional police forces immediately rushed to the site and the entire entire area was cordoned.
Police officer informed that four persons have been arrested in connection to the incident and none was injured in the melee.
It is the second incident where locals have clashed with the police in Assam as on Friday in Dhubri, vendors and customers at the Folimari Budhbari market attacked the police personnel who were trying to enforce the lockdown order imposed by the government to contain the spread of the pandemic Covid-19.
