Assam: Guwahati could lose hosting rights to under 17 FIFA World Cup
Guwahati will have to act very fast to keep its chances of hosting the under 17 FIFA World Cup alive. The city will need to get its stadium and the facilities ready on time before the international competition.
Guwahati has been given the chance of hosting the opening ceremony of ISL this year which means that the organising committee of the tournament thinks that the city is more than fit for the annual tournament.
However, FIFA’s rules and guidelines are more strict than that of ISL, so the AIFF and the Assam Football Federation must stitch things together to maintain the hosting rights of the city.
Various sources revealed that the city is running late the stipulated schedule of renovating the facilities of the stadium. The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the under-17 FIFA World Cup held meeting last month to discuss the progress of the works and they assessed that the things are running behind schedule.
The Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium will need several new upgradation like enlargement of pitch, construction of proper media gallery, refurbished players’ tunnel etc.
If the city somehow happen to lose the hosting rights of this massive tournament it will be a matter of shame and disgrace for the state and the entire region.
The center had also promised to give Assam an amount of Rs. 9.34 crore for the upgradation work, but we are not sure if the fund has been released or not.
