First confirmed COVID-19 case in Northeast reported in Manipur

A 23 year old woman who recently returned from UK has been reported to be the first confirmed case of the novel coronavirus or COVID-19 in the state of Manipur, Imphal (West).

The patient is now undergoing treatment at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) hospital in Imphal where she was diagnosed with COVID-19.

The 23 year old was a student pursuing her studies at UK who returned home from London 6 days ago.

She hails from Thangmeiband, Imphal. It is to be noted that it is the first positive case of COVID-19 in Manipur and the whole of northeast India.

The family members of the patient has been quarantined and are being tested for the coronavirus. The authorities are currently trying to trace those who may have come in contact with the woman.

Meanwhile, the Manipur Government on Monday declared complete lockdown in the state till March 31 as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of the disease.

The government of Manipur has also set up isolation wards for COVID-19 patients at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) at Imphal.
