Inter-Ministerial Central team assesses flood damage in Assam
The flood-affected districts of Assam were visited by a high-level seven-member ‘Inter-Ministerial Central Team’ (IMCT) from various Union Ministries for an on-the-spot assessment of flood/landslide damage caused in the year 2020.
From 23rd to 25th November 2020, the Central team headed by NDMA (National Disaster Management Authority) Additional Secretary, New Delhi SandeepPoundrik, collected details of the damage caused from senior officials at the Chief Secretary’s Conference Hall on Thursday.
Discussions were done with the Central team on the damage caused, loss of livelihood as well property in Goalpara, Kamrup, Nagaon, Hojai and Bongaigaon districts.
Jishnu Baruah, Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam, requested the Central team to grant the release of funds under the ‘National Disaster Response Force’ (NDRF) for repair and restoration work concerning the damaged caused in this year flood.
The Central team was also urged by Baruah to consider erosion as an item admissible under SDRF/NDRF in their report to the Government of India. The request has been put forward as the State suffering severe river erosion year after year.
The State government has sought Rs. 2642.99 crore from the SDRF/NDRF for the purpose of repair and restoration works related to floods and erosion.
The team of six comprises of Mr Ayush Puniya, Assistant Commissioner, Union Ministry of Rural Development; Narendra Kumar, Director, Sudhir Kumar, Director, Monitoring and Appraisal Directorate, Ministry of Jal Shakti, Directorate of Jute Development, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare; O.P. Suman, Deputy Director, Central Electricity Authority, Ministry of Power; Abhishek Agarwal, Assistant Executive Engineer (Civil), Ministry of Road & Transport and S.K. Pradhan, Joint Director, Expenditure, Ministry of Finance.
According to the press release, other members present in the meeting include top officials of the Revenue and Disaster Management department and the ASDMA (Assam State Disaster Management Authority).
